In the segment of affordable watches, Fromanteel is a new player. Using the name of the Fromanteel family who is well known for clocks which they made in the 17th century.
The company was founded in 2009 by Alfredo Silva and Martijn van Hassel both of them big watch lovers. Resident in Amsterdam.
The packing of the watch is made up of a jute bag. A label on which is written who has been responsible for the various stages of production of this watch. In addition, a seal affixed to the bag with the logo of Fromanteel. All of which is in contact with the past of the name.
A surprising sight when we open the box.
A well designed stainless steel case. Full polished and fitted with a screwed back. On the back is a stylistic globe showing the meridians on it. Here again a reference to the origin of the name Fromanteel.
The front is equipped with sapphire crystal. The chronograph and 12 hour hand coloured blue in this variant. The dial is a matte silver version, there is also a black version available in this series .
The figures are polished silver like the other hands. The crown is provided with fine grooves which facilitates the adjustment and is also provided with a yellow finish seen on all Fromanteel watches. The chronograph buttons are simple in form , but feel solid . Date display at 4:30 position, black letters on a white background. The watch is easy to read and doesn’t provide unnecessary information. The watch is powered by a Ronda 5030D movement. This is a reliable Swiss quartz movement which is used by many brands. Water resistant up to 50 meters ( 5ATM ).
The straps are leather dyed blue and has a crocodile print leather finished with white stitching. They feature a polished buckle and quick release that allows it to change straps quickly.
The website of Fromanteel shows a wide arrange of straps that could give your watch a different look in one blink of an eye. The disadvantage of the straps is that they are thickened so they feel very stiff. Even after wearing it for two weeks, there was little improvement in comfort.
Fromanteel clearly wants to grow to a higher segment of the watch market. Using Swiss quartz chronograph watches and sapphire crystal are clearly an example. The marketing activities are brought to a higher level, videos and interviews with style icons.
Much attention is paid to the origin of the name and that ‘s where it encounters a bit against the grain. The Fromanteel brothers were ahead of their time when you look at the technical developments which they applied in their clocks. And this is exactly where Fromanteel lose points. They go for existing technologies and adapt their designs accordingly.
Fromanteel has a different kind of watch customer, most of the watches are sold by lifestyle stores instead of jewellers. The watches are often sold as a fashion accessory and meet a different kind of customer than for example a jeweller. This strategy that has proven highly successful by ICE -Watch. The watches are an extension of a complete outfit. The extensive collection of watch straps are in line with this strategy.
From the watch industry they have direct competition from established brands like Tissot watches , Festina and Longines. And to come at par, they still have a way to go .
The Fromanteel Globetrotter watch has a good atmosphere that lies between classical and sporty. In combination with the ability to simply change the looks by changing the watch strap, makes it a nice watch.
If Fromanteel starts using other movements, materials and making there designs more special by for example making double layers for the dail, they will enter the next level of watch making.
Regarding the price (495 euro; in comparison with other competitors the price is high.
