Today on “Microbrand Sunday” here on Watchinsight.com we are taking a closer look at a Dutch made divers watch, FLORIJN. More specific the up to 100 pieces limited number 2 model in steel with black pvd bezel. The Florijn was the Dutch currency for centuries. First called the golden Florijn and later called the guilder (fl) when it finally was replaced in 2002 by the Euro and we all got  f#cked over by our government. Not to make a political statement, just saying. But this is not at all the case with the FLORIJN 2. This  is pure Dutch design and a very honest divers watch with a link to our great Dutch history.

FLORIJN

FLORIJN as a watch company was founded by watch lover Hans Heuvelman in 2014. After years of collecting and trading watches it was time to create a watch of his own. With the FLORIJN as a brand Hans likes to refer to all the good that The Netherlands have produced.  The company objective is to offer a pleasant, comfortable, affordable and reliable watch, clearly indicating time and date and suitable to wear in any circumstance. The last weeks I have worn this watch in many different circumstances all over the globe and Hans succeeded very well with this great diving watch with dual time!

FLORIJN 2

The FLORIJN at hand is the number 2 model. FLORIJN offers 3 models, all limited to 100 316L stainless steel pieces. A complete stainless steel version, a stainless steel version with black DLC bezel, and a stainless steel black DLC version. All made with the utmost care and made of the best materials. Sharp, functional, simple and powerfull. A firm and honest Dutch watch!

Case

The 316L stainless steel FLORIJN watch case measures 45mm x 53mm(lug to lug) and has a thickness of 14,1 mm. So this is not a divers watch for the faint hearted as it is quit heavy as well. But to be honest, it does’nt wear that way at all. The wide lugs ar curved very nicely and it wears comfortable. Speaking of the lugs, these wide lugs are one of the unique figures on this watch wich makes it a real tool watch! The FLORIJN is fitted with a decorated screw down case back and screwed crown with fl logo protected by two massive crown guards. Fl refers to the old Dutch currency as mentioned above. On top a sapphire crystal is placed with a date loupe over the date window at the 6 o’clock position. If you order a FLORIJN you can select the option “with of without loupe”. I think this is a fantastic option as I know not everyone is fond of a date loupe. By the way, I really like the date window position at the 6 o’clock position. Also the bezel is something special. It is a thick bezel, 120 clicks uni directional with dual time zone wich makes the FLORIJN your ideal travelling companion.

Dial and hands

Looking at the dial it really will surprice you. At this price level it is custom to place a flat and printed dial. Not with FLORIJN. The dial has bright applied indices, on the 3, 9 and 12 position even double indices and gives some sort of a 3D effect. As mentioned the date window is placed on the 6 o’clock postion and instead of Swiss made, anno MMXIV is printed around the date window. Just love that. Just under teh 12 o’clock position in red the FL logo is printed. The hands are simple and functional. Hour hand, minute hand and indices are provided with luminova.

Movement

The FLORIJN is equipped with a reliable Seiko NH35 hacking and hand winding movement with date function. Nothing fancy, but also functional and reliable.

Straps

As you know I often state that a divers watch should be made and must be used as a divers watch. So a divers watch on leather…..I don’t get it. FLORIJN offers their watches with 3 straps. A Nato, a rubber strap and a leather strap. The rubber strap is marvelous. Nice design and stitched even. The buckles are signed with the FL logo!

Conclusion

The Florijn 2 is a great and unique divers watch, a tool watch. A sturdy watch that could last a lifetime, even 2 or more lifetimes. Solid Dutch quality and already a part of our rich history! For € 326 ex VAT you will buy a dual time divers watch equipped with automatic movement, sapphire crystal with loupe option, 3 strap options, functional box and two years warranty. And above all, you buy a part of Dutch history!
